Why Use DLC Coated Cam Followers?
DLC is a thin, hard, and low friction coating made of carbon that mimics some of the properties of diamond. It is applied to the surface of the cam follower using processes like Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) or Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD).
Suitable for engines that:
- Operate at high RPM or under heavy loads (e.g., track, racing, or high performance road cars).
- Use aggressive camshaft profiles with high lift and rapid ramp rates, which increase the stress on cam followers.
- Require reliability and efficiency improvements in extreme conditions.
For instance, if a high lift camshaft with aggressive timing is installed, DLC coated cam followers can help ensure smooth operation and reduce wear on both the camshaft and the followers, preserving the longevity of these critical components.
While DLC coated cam followers are not strictly necessary for standard engines, they can be a good investment in situations where durability, reduced wear, or future proofing is desired. However, for a standard engine rebuild without special requirements, out standard cam followers found under VS2250 are sufficient and more cost effective. If you have the budget and value the long term benefits, DLC coated cam followers can still be a worthwhile addition to any engine.
